Why should you clean your Paddock?
For the horse owner and smallholder, collection of manure is one of the biggest headaches encountered. The average horse for instance will produce approximately 20Kg of manure each day. That is 1.5 tonnes per annum. It is a problem which grows rapidly, and is not easy to ignore. In the summertime, worm larvae can spread from the droppings to the paddock grass in only a couple of days.
Manure from grazing animals, including horses, is high in nutrients (e.g phosphorous and nitrogen) and also contains pathogens (e.g cryptosporidium) the pathogens and viruses that occur in manure can cause animal health problems. Studies have shown that removal of feces twice per week can reduces the parasite burden in horses by over 95% compared to no removal.
